Side Effects of Nitric Oxide Supplements


 

Nitric Oxide supplements are all the rage in body building circles. Many people that use this type of supplement feel that Nitric Oxide gives them more energy and a better muscle "pump." There are, however, some side effects that may be associated with Nitric Oxide supplementation.

 

  1. Identification

    • Nitric Oxide was first discovered in the 1980's. It was found that this gas was present every time a muscle contracted and blood vessels were dilated. This is known as Hemodilation, which means that blood vessels are widened, blood flow is increased and more nutrients are being delivered throughout the body.

    Stomach Upset

    • Gastrointestinal disturbances are the most well known side effect from using a Nitric Oxide supplement. Nausea and diarrhea were the most common complaints, however, this can be reduced if taken on a full stomach.

    L-Arginine

    • L-Arginine is the precursor to Nitric Oxide, and is a key ingredient in these supplement products. L-Arginine is generally safe, but can be toxic if taken in high doses. This can be avoided by following the directions on the label, and not increasing the dose.

    Headaches

    • There have been headaches associated with the use of Nitric Oxide supplements. People who have migraine headaches, or take prescription medication for headaches should avoid using Nitric Oxide supplements.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Nitric Oxide supplements are considered safe when taken according to the directions. As with any dietary supplement, some side effects may occur. Always check with your doctor before using any supplement, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

      Side Effects of Creatine


      Creatine is an organic acid that first came into the national consciousness when many players around professional baseball were accused of using it. Though it does supply energy to muscle and nerve cells, creatine does have some negative health consequences. Research on the supplement is in its early stage, but some side effects of creatine have been unearthed in the 1990s and 2000s, both positive and negative.

      1. Cognitive Ability

        • Some studies have shown increased cognitive ability and memory recall in vegetarian and elderly subjects taking creatine.

        Dehydration

        • Creatine users are more prone to chronic dehydration from increased muscular water uptake, and this can be noticed during even proper user cycles.

        Increased Muscle Mass

        • Aside from the desired effect of increased muscle energy, some users notice an increase and actual muscle mass, and therefore body mass, due to increased water mass.

        Lower Leg Pain

        • Also associated with creatine use, lower leg pain and an increase in anterior pressures has been seen in post-exercise and at rest users.

        Natal Health

        • One study from the UK has shown another positive effect of creative: the use of creatine by a pregnant mother can help to reduce brain damage in children.

        Nerve Cell Protection

        • Another study showed that creatine supplements can protect nerve cells from damage in patients with brain injury or Huntingdon's disease.

        Misconceptions

        • Mistaken early reports found that creatine intake can lead to an increase in cancer cells in the body, but this has since been disproved.
